Abstract

Abstract: Someone’s linguistics skill cannot be separated from the listening skill. A good listening
skill will make the students communicate easily. A good listening skill is in line with the student’s
ability in accepting the given materials in the learning process. Mental retarded children are similar
to normal children. They need listening skill in their learning process. Based on the field
phenomenon, mental retarded children’s listening skill is still low. It can be proven by their
Indonesian language average score which is low. Based on the problem above, the writer conducts
the research by using certain media. one of the media which can be used to develop listening to
short story skill for mental retarded children is hand puppet. This research aims to prove wheter
mental retarded chlidren’s listening to short story skill can be affected by hand puppet. The
quantitative approach is used to gain the research aims. The data collecting methods used are
observations, test, and documentations. The non parametric analysis is used to analyze the data. It
assisted by sign test. Based the analysis on pre tes and post tes by using sign test, ZH is 2,27. it
comes from critical score of α = 5% (two side test) and Z table 1,96. therefore, Ho is rejected
because ZH > 1,96. It means that Ha is accepted. Therefore, there is a significant effect of hand
puppet for the mental retarded children’s listening to short story skill of at fifth grade.
