A COMMUNICATION CULTURE PROBLEMS IN BIPA LEARNING IN SOUTH KOREAN LEARNERS
A STUDY OF SECOND LANGUAGE LEARNING
Abstract
This study aims to identify the cultural problems of verbal communication in BIPA learning, which are experienced by South Korean learners based on studies on second language learning. Furthermore, the problem is analyzed in a linguistic contrast, namely by comparing different linguistic elements between Indonesian and Korean. This research method uses a qualitative approach to dig deep data from a social phenomenon. The data in this study was taken in the BIPA class of Surabaya State University, which involved five South Korean learners and six BIPA teachers. Data on the contrast analysis of verbal communication culture between Indonesian and Korean were obtained through literature review. The data collection technique was carried out by interviewing Korean learners and BIPA teachers, using interview guidelines that have been validated by experts. The data analysis technique uses the Miles and Huberman model through four stages, namely data collection, data reduction, data presentation and conclusion drawn. The results of the study were obtained that Korean learners experienced verbal communication problems from sentence structure, tense, language level, and greeting words. The conclusion of this study is that there are differences in verbal communication between Indonesians and Koreans which can trigger misunderstandings and perceptions between Korean learners and BIPA teachers. This misunderstanding is caused by differences in cultural backgrounds. By conducting a linguistic contrast analysis between Indonesian and Korean, it is hoped that it can minimize the occurrence of misunderstandings between Korean learners and BIPA teachers.
