Abstract
Abstract
This study discusses the representation and resistance of marginalized characters in Brian Khrisna's novel Sisi Tergelap Surga (The Darkest Side of Heaven) using Bourdieu's sociological theory of literature. The novel tells the story of the lives of marginalized people living on the outskirts of Jakarta. The characters in Sisi Tergelap Surga face limited conditions. They are confronted not only with poverty, but also with alienation and the domination of power that restricts the movement of the marginalized class. The purpose of this study is to describe the representation and resistance of the marginalized class as influenced by habitus, capital ownership, and social arena in the novel. This study uses Pierre Bourdieu's sociological approach to literature. The data source used is the novel entitled Sisi Tergelap Surga by Brian Khrisna, published in November 2023. This study uses a documentary collection technique with flow model analysis data by Miles and Huberman. The results show that the habitus, capital ownership, and social arena of each character are interrelated, giving rise to social resistance. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that there are habitus and capital ownership (economic, social, cultural, and symbolic) in the characters' personalities, as well as the environment as the social arena in which the characters interact with other individuals or groups. These three components form the resistance that the characters exert to survive in unbalanced social conditions.
