Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to describe the inner conflicts of the characters and to analyze the process of searching for meaning in the novel Timun Jelita by Raditya Dika through the perspective of Viktor Frankl’s logotherapy. The search for meaning in life is highly relevant in modern society, particularly when individuals experience existential emptiness caused by monotonous routines, social pressure, and past failures. The novel Timun Jelita represents this phenomenon of existential emptiness through the characters Timun and Jelita, who experience a crisis of meaning and inner conflict throughout their life journeys. This research employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive qualitative method. The data source of the study is the novel Timun Jelita by Raditya Dika. The research data consist of narrative excerpts, dialogues, and character monologues that reflect inner conflict and the process of searching for meaning in life. Data were collected using reading, observing, and note-taking techniques. Data analysis was conducted through identification, classification, and interpretation based on Viktor Frankl’s logotherapy concepts, namely Freedom of Will, Will to Meaning, and Meaning of Life, as well as the three pathways to discovering meaning in life: creative values, experiential values, and attitudinal values. The findings indicate that the characters’ inner conflicts in the novel Timun Jelita manifest in the form of existential emptiness and past trauma. The process of searching for meaning in life occurs through involvement in musical activities (creative values), relational experiences with others in the form of cooperation, trust, and emotional support (experiential values), and responsible attitudes in responding to suffering and past wounds (attitudinal values). These three processes demonstrate a strong relevance to Viktor Frankl’s logotherapy concepts. Therefore, this study concludes that the novel Timun Jelita represents a process of searching for and discovering meaning in life that aligns with the principles of Viktor Frankl’s logotherapy.
