Abstract

This study aims to describe the use of Canva media in learning to write news texts, describe the effectiveness of using Canva media on the ability to write news texts, and describe students' responses to the use of Canva media in learning to write news texts for class VII of SMPN 1 Sooko Mojokerto. The study uses a mixed method approach by combining quantitative and qualitative data to obtain a comprehensive picture of the learning process and outcomes. The type of research used is an experiment with a pretest-posttest control group design. The study population was 320 class VII students, with a sample of two classes selected using cluster random sampling techniques, namely class VII A as the control class and class VII B as the experimental class. The data collection technique for this study used three approaches, namely observation, tests, and questionnaires. The results of the observation showed that the implementation of learning in the experimental class was more optimal than the control class, with the percentage of teacher learning implementation of 87.5% in the experimental class and 77.5% in the control class, while student activity in both classes was in the good category (70%). The results also showed that the average score of the experimental class increased from 77.03 to 88.65. The t-test results showed a calculated t-value of 2.820, which was greater than the t-table value of 2.461 at a significance level of 0.05%. The questionnaire results showed a positive response from students to the use of Canva, as it increased motivation, creativity, and understanding of news text structure. Therefore, it can be concluded that the use of the Canva application as a learning medium is effective in improving the news text writing skills of seventh-grade students at SMPN 1 Sooko Mojokerto.
