Abstract
This study discusses the implementation of learning using the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) method in teaching short story writing to students of class IX-G at SMPN 42 Surabaya. The purpose of this study is to examine both the process and the outcomes of applying the Problem-Based Learning method in short story writing instruction. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative, with observation as the primary data collection technique. The data were obtained based on direct observations conducted by the researcher in the field. The results of the study indicate that the learning process using the Problem-Based Learning method is quite effective in short story writing activities. Students were able to participate in the learning process in accordance with the lesson plan (RPP) as a guideline for classroom instruction. The researcher applied the five stages (syntax) of PBL in the teaching and learning process. Based on this process, it can be concluded that the short stories produced by the students were generally good. This is reflected in the percentage of students who achieved scores above the Minimum Mastery Criteria (KKM), which was 72%, while 28% of students did not meet the criteria. The KKM set by the school is 80. In addition, the average score of the class reached 87, equivalent to a grade of B (good), indicating that students were able to produce short stories effectively using the Problem-Based Learning method.
