Abstract

This study aims to describe the practice of cultural hegemony of factory workers and the tradition of sugarcane weddings in the film Pabrik Gula by Alwi Suryadi based on Antonio Gramsci's theory of hegemony. This study is a sociological study of literature using a qualitative approach. The data sources in this study were obtained from the film Pabrik Gula (2025) in the form of dialogue, narrative, and relevant scenes in the film. The data collection technique used library techniques, listening, and taking notes through a data classification process. The data analysis technique used was a hermeneutic descriptive analysis technique. Based on the research conducted, the following results were obtained. The practice of hegemony shows the dominance of the ruling class over factory workers which is not only coercive, but also through agreements that are culturally and ideologically constructed in everyday life. The ideology that develops in the film represents the internalization of the values of obedience, discipline, and belief in traditions that are voluntarily accepted by factory workers. The role of the state is shown as a vessel for the ongoing hegemony that connects elements of coercion and agreement through social structures and applicable rules. In addition, the tradition of sugarcane weddings becomes a form of cultural legitimacy in maintaining the dominance of the ruling class. Thus, the film Sugar Factory represents how hegemony works in a complex way through culture, ideology, and social structures in the lives of factory workers.
