REPRESENTATION OF RAEWYN CONNELL'S HEGEMONIC MASCULINITY IN THE MALE CHARACTERS IN THE NOVEL RENJANA BY EL ALICIA

Abstract

This article aims to describe the forms of hegemonic masculinity found in the novel Renjana by El Alicia. The focus of this study highlights how all male characters indicated to possess hegemonic masculinity manifest it through their efforts, speech acts, and social standing, utilizing Raewyn Connell's theory. This research employs a qualitative method with a descriptive-analytical approach, which is appropriate for a comprehensive exploration. The collected data consists of dialogues and narratives that represent hegemonic masculinity. The data collection technique used is literature review, while the data analysis technique utilizes the Miles and Huberman model (data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification). The results indicate that hegemonic masculinity in the male characters of the novel Renjana by El Alicia is demonstrated through a strong physique, self-control, a respected social standing, and the ability to dominate not only women but also fellow men with minimal effort, without incorporating patriarchal culture. Furthermore, data was also found showing a fragmentation of masculinity, characterized by self-regret over the loss of a wife, which triggers cruel and abusive behavior.
