Abstract

This study aims to identify and describe the forms of personification employed in the short story collection The Story From Zelda by Zelda Maharani and to examine the stylistic meanings and functions conveyed through their use. The study adopts a stylistic approach and employs a qualitative descriptive research method. The primary data source is the short story collection The Story From Zelda, while the data consist of sentences and expressions containing personification. Data were collected through reading and note-taking techniques and analyzed using stylistic analysis.

The findings indicate that 24 instances of personification were identified in the short story collection. These include the personification of abstract concepts, auditory elements, sensory experiences, movement, inanimate objects, and natural phenomena, with the personification of abstract concepts being the most dominant category. The analysis also reveals the presence of connotative, emotive, and contextual meanings, among which connotative meaning occurs most frequently. The use of personification in the stories reflects the author’s inner experiences and sensory perceptions as a visually impaired writer, particularly through non-visual sensations and psychological experiences. Furthermore, personification functions to intensify emotional expression, portray the characters’ inner conflicts, and stimulate readers’ imagination.
