Abstract

and shared, particularly through short-form videos produced by influencers. Among these, Instagram Reels allow creators to communicate messages through a combination of visual elements, making them a powerful platform for shaping how audiences understand confidence, independence, and self-control. Despite the growing popularity of this content, little attention has been paid to how women's empowerment is visually constructed in influencer-created videos. This study explores how women's empowerment is represented in three of Wizard Liz's most-viewed Instagram Reels. It employs a qualitative approach using Visual Grammar (Kress & van Leeuwen, 2006) to analyze visual meanings and Kabeer's (1999) Women's Empowerment Theory to interpret the findings. The data consist of key frames captured from the selected Reels and are analyzed through representational, interactive, and compositional meanings. The findings show that each Reel presents empowerment through a different visual path, such as reflection, recovery, and emotional steadiness. Thus, all Reels consistently portray empowerment as an individual process. Resources are represented through self-presentation and appearance, agency through deliberate body language and self-directed actions, and achievement through confidence, independence, and emotional stability. Overall, the Reels present women's empowerment primarily as personal growth and self-development rather than as a process shaped by social or structural factors. This study contributes to multimodal discourse research by showing how visual choices in influencer-created short-form videos shape contemporary understandings of women's empowerment.
