Abstract

Instapoetry is a form of digital poetry published on Instagram that employs concise language, minimalist visual presentation, and symbolic expressions to convey emotional experiences. As a growing form of digital literature, Instapoetry reflects contemporary emotional and cultural issues through brief yet meaningful poetic texts. This study aims to describe the denotative and connotative meanings that represent the emotion of happiness in Instapoems published on the Instagram account @missclaralouise. The research employed a descriptive qualitative approach using content analysis. The data consisted of three German Instapoems selected through purposive sampling based on their symbolic content, the representation of happiness, and high audience engagement. The analysis integrated Roland Barthes' semiotic theory (1977) to examine denotative and connotative meanings through the Expression–Relation–Content (ERC) model and Paul Ekman's basic emotion theory (1992, 1999, 2004) to identify emotional representation through the stages of antecedent, automatic appraisal, and affective response. The findings indicate that, at the denotative level, the poems portray concrete experiences of rediscovering the self and affirming personal worth. At the connotative level, these meanings develop into symbolic representations of self-acceptance, self-worth, emotional recovery, and personal growth. The resulting connotative meanings function as antecedents that trigger positive automatic appraisal, leading to an affective response characterized by happiness. These findings confirm that integrating Roland Barthes' semiotics with Paul Ekman's emotion theory provides an effective analytical framework for examining the representation of emotions in digital literature while contributing to the broader study of contemporary digital poetry.
