STRUKTUR NARATIF DALAM DONGENG GRIMM BERSAUDARA "DIE KLUGE ELSE" DAN "LÄUSCHEN UND FLÖHCHEN": KAJIAN FUNGSI NARATIF VLADIMIR PROPP

Abstract

ABSTRACT
This study examines the narrative structure of two folktales from the Brothers Grimm collection, namely Die Kluge Else and Läuschen und Flöhchen, by applying Vladimir Propp's narrative structure theory, which focuses on character functions and spheres of action. These two folktales were purposively selected because they represent two different folktale genres, namely the humorous (comic) tale and the cumulative tale, thereby enabling an examination of the consistency of Propp's framework across genres within the same Brothers Grimm collection. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach, with data consisting of sentences from the
original German texts collected through documentation and note-taking techniques and subsequently analyzed through eight systematic stages. The findings reveal that not all of Propp's thirty-one character functions and seven spheres of action are fully represented in the two folktales. Die Kluge Else exhibits the highest number of character functions and spheres of action, comprising twenty-one character functions and two spheres of action, whereas Läuschen und Flöhchen contains the fewest, with eight character functions and one sphere of action. These findings demonstrate that the number of character functions and spheres of action is not
necessarily directly proportional but rather depends on the characteristics of the folktale genre and the distribution of character roles within each tale. Furthermore, the findings reaffirm the flexibility and relevance of Propp's structural framework in accommodating the diversity of genres found in the Brothers Grimm folktale collection.
