Abstract

ABSTRACT

This study aims to examine the use of cynical language style in Melissa's instapoetry (@melissa.ebeling) as a medium for expressing emotional experiences and conveying criticism of life realities in the digital era. The development of digital literature, particularly instapoetry on Instagram, demonstrates that social media functions not only as a platform for publishing literary works but also as a medium of expression that combines language, emotion, and social reflection in a concise form. Therefore, this study focuses on how cynicism is employed to construct meaning and strengthen the messages conveyed by the poet. This research applies a stylistic approach using a qualitative descriptive method. The study employs Gorys Keraf's theory of figurative language and Ivo Braak's theory of literary functions. Keraf's theory is used to identify the forms of cynicism, while Braak's theory is applied to analyze the rhetorical, aesthetic, and emotional functions found in the texts. The data consist of instapoetry posts published on Melissa's Instagram account (@melissa.ebeling), selected based on the presence of cynical language. Data were collected through the observation and note taking method and then analyzed descriptively using the selected theoretical framework. The findings reveal that cynicism is consistently used to express distrust, disappointment, and criticism of life realities. In addition to creating aesthetic value through diction and language structure, cynicism also functions as a rhetorical strategy to reinforce emotional messages and social criticism. These findings indicate that instapoetry serves as an effective form of literary communication in the digital space.
