ABSTRACT
This study aims to examine the representation of actors in Deutsche Welle's news article ‘Israel bereitet Verschärfung der Gaza-Angriffe vor’ by applying Teun A. van Dijk's Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) framework. This study applied a qualitative approach using a single news article published on May 4, 2025, as the primary data source. Data were collected through documentation and analyzed at three levels: macrostructure, microstructure, and social cognition, focusing on thematic organization, schematic structure, lexical choices, syntactic patterns, rhetorical strategies, local coherence, and the relationship between discourse and its socio-political context. The findings reveal that actor representation is constructed through discursive strategies that reflect particular ideological perspectives rather than neutral reporting. At the macrostructural level, the article frames Israel's military escalation as a legitimate response to security threats, while at the microstructural level Israel is predominantly represented through institutional and technical language that reinforces its legitimacy, whereas Hamas is consistently portrayed using negatively charged lexical expressions emphasizing violence and barbarity. Furthermore, humanitarian representation is asymmetrical, as Israeli civilian suffering is described in greater detail and evokes empathy, whereas Palestinian civilian casualties are more frequently presented through passive constructions, omission of agency, and less personalized descriptions. From the perspective of social cognition, these discursive patterns are closely associated with Germany's Staatsräson doctrine, which functions as a shared ideological framework influencing journalistic practices. Overall, the study demonstrates that actor representation emerges from the interaction of textual structures, social cognition, and socio-political context, thereby reproducing ideological positions and power relations within international media discourse.
