DEIKSIS TEMPORAL "VORZEITIGKEIT" DALAM TEKS BERITA "DEUTSCHE WELLE"

Abstract

ABSTRACT

Pragmatics is the study of linguistics that views an utterance in relation to its context, not merely its literal meaning (Yule, 1996). Within pragmatics, deixis is a linguistic phenomenon whose meaning depends on the situation of utterance (Lehmann, 2013), one type of which is temporal deixis, whose meaning depends on the utterance's reference point, or origo. Temporal deixis has three categories, one of which is Vorzeitigkeit, events that precede the origo or have already occurred before the utterance. This study examines the forms and meanings of Vorzeitigkeit in five German-language news texts from the Deutsche Welle portal published in 2024 - 2025, using a descriptive qualitative approach. Data were collected through documentation techniques and analyzed through identification, determination of the Jetzt-Origo, classification, and contextual analysis. The results show that Vorzeitigkeit is the most dominant category found in the news texts, realized through three types. The Implicit type, marked by verb forms such as Präteritum (wurde aufgeteilt), Perfekt (hat versucht), and Plusquamperfekt (hatte blockiert), is the most frequent, proving the texts convey past-time information more often through the Tempus system than through explicit words. The Explicit type is marked by lexical markers such as in der Vergangenheit and kürzlich, while the Combination type, a novelty of this study, is marked by both markers occurring together, as in vergangenen Jahr accompanied by gekratzt hat. Most Vorzeitigkeit markers are referential, such as kürzlich, while some are anaphoric, such as in den Jahren zuvor, referring back to a previously mentioned event rather than the Jetzt-Origo.
