Abstract

ABSTRACT

Collocations are conventional word combinations commonly used by native speakers and constitute an essential aspect of German language learning. However, collocations in Kursbuch Netzwerk Neu A1 are presented implicitly, causing learners to perceive them as separate lexical items rather than fixed combinations. This study aims to describe the structural patterns and analyze the semantic aspects of German collocations found in Kursbuch Netzwerk Neu A1. This research employed a qualitative approach with descriptive statistical methods. The data consisted of linguistic units containing German collocations collected through documentation and note-taking techniques. The data were classified according to collocational structural patterns and analyzed using Quasthoff's (2011) theory of collocation structure and Hausmann's (2004) theory of collocational semantics. The findings revealed a total of 108 collocations distributed across various learning topics. The most dominant structural pattern was Substantiv specifically Substantiv  (als Objekt), followed by Adverb and Adjektiv. In terms of semantic aspects, most collocations exhibited a literal degree of transparency, while the remaining collocations were classified as semi-idiomatic (teilidiomatisch). No metaphorical collocations were identified. The findings further indicate that the relationship between the base and the collocator is determined not only by lexical restrictions but also by conventional usage in German. This study is expected to contribute to the development of German collocation studies and serve as a reference for vocabulary instruction and future research on German collocations using different linguistic data sources.
