METAFORA KONSEPTUAL DALAM BERITA POLITIK "DEUTSCHE WELLE" KARYA CRISTOPH HASSEL BACH

Abstract

Language in news texts does not merely function to convey facts, but also serves as a means of framing reality to make it more comprehensible to readers, and one method frequently employed to achieve this is metaphor. In cognitive linguistics, metaphor is understood not merely as a linguistic ornament but as a mode of thinking that helps humans comprehend abstract concepts through other, more familiar concepts, and it is this cognitive function of metaphor that becomes the central concern of the present study. This research examines the conceptual metaphors found in Deutsche Welle political news texts written by journalist Christoph Hasselbach, with two main research questions: first, what forms do conceptual metaphors take in these political news texts, and second, what meanings are contained within those metaphors. Accordingly, the aim of this study is to describe both the forms and the meanings of conceptual metaphors used in the news texts under analysis. The data sources consist of five political news articles obtained from the official Deutsche Welle website, published between 2025 and 2026, namely "Nach einem Jahr Trump droht der transatlantische Bruch," "G20-Gipfel in Afrika ohne Trump, Xi und Putin, aber mit Merz," "Deutschlands Flirt mit Indien," "Deutschlands Außenpolitik 2026," and "Deutschland setzt im Streit mit Trump auf die Hilfe Melonis."  The data were collected through a note-taking observation technique before being analyzed using Lakoff and Johnson's (2003) Conceptual Metaphor Theory to determine both the types and the meanings of the metaphors present in the texts. The findings of this study reveal that there are fifteen instances of conceptual metaphors identified in the analyzed news texts, encompassing structural, ontological, and orientational metaphors. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that metaphors in political news texts function not merely as stylistic choices but as cognitive tools that help readers understand political issues in ways more closely connected to their everyday experiences.
