ADAPTASI UNSUR INTRINSIK DALAM EKRANISASI NOVEL "DER VORLESER" KARYA BERNHARD SCHLINK KE FILM "THE READER" KARYA STEPHEN DALDRY

Abstract

Film adaptation involves transforming a literary work into a cinematic medium, requiring adjustments due to the different characteristics of both media. These adjustments often result in changes to intrinsic elements, including characterization, setting, and plot. This study aims to describe the forms of adaptation applied to these elements in the transformation of Bernhard Schlink’s novel Der Vorleser into Stephen Daldry’s film The Reader. The data sources include the novel Der Vorleser, the film The Reader, and the German subtitle transcription, while the research data consist of textual excerpts and film scenes showing adaptation changes. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method using the simak-catat (observation and note-taking) technique. Data analysis is conducted through a comparative approach based on Eneste’s (1991) adaptation theory of reduction, addition, and variation, as well as Nurgiyantoro’s (2013) theory of intrinsic elements. The findings reveal that the adaptation process applies three strategies: reduction, addition, and variation. Reduction is the dominant strategy, primarily used to achieve narrative efficiency due to film duration limitations. Meanwhile, addition and variation serve as creative adjustments to strengthen characterization, clarify settings, and enhance visual storytelling. These transformations demonstrate that film adaptation is not merely a process of transferring a narrative from one medium to another, but rather an act of reinterpretation aimed at creating a more engaging and effective cinematic experience while preserving the essence of the original work.
