KONFLIK MENDEKAT-MENJAUH PADA TOKOH HUI BUH DALAM FILM "HUI BUH UND DAS HEXENSCHLOSS" KARYA SEBASTIAN NIEMANN

ABSTRACT

This research examines the inner conflict experienced by Hui Buh, the main character of the German fantasy-comedy film “Hui Buh und das Hexenschloss” (2022) directed by Sebastian Niemann, using Kurt Lewin’s conflict theory and three-stage change model as the analytical framework. The problems addressed in this research are: (1) what forms of inner conflict does the character Hui Buh experience? and (2) how are those conflicts resolved? This research uses a qualitative descriptive approach with a documentation technique, namely repeated viewing of the film, marking dialogue and scenes that indicate inner conflict, then analyzing them based on Lewin's (1951) concepts of driving force and restraining force. The findings show that all seven instances of inner conflict experienced by Hui Buh belong to the approach-avoidance conflict category, while no approach-approach or avoidance-avoidance conflict was found. The conflict stems from the tension between Hui Buh's personal ambition to become the most terrifying ghost, his fear of witches, and his responsibility toward the people he loves. This research also finds that the resolution of Hui Buh's inner conflict occurs through three stages of Lewin's change model, consisting of one unfreezing datum, one moving datum, and two refreezing data, showing that Hui Buh's self-awareness develops into concrete action until his new behavior becomes stable and is accepted by his social environment.
