PELANGGARAN PRINSIP KERJA SAMA DALAM FILM DAS LEBEN DER ANDEREN KARYA FLORIAN HENCKEL VON DONNERSMARCK

Abstract

This study aims to describe the violations of the Cooperative Principle that lead to the formation of conversational implicatures and to explain their functions in the film Das Leben der Anderen (2006) directed by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck. The film depicts communication in the context of surveillance by the East German State Security (Stasi), where speakers often convey meanings indirectly to achieve particular communicative purposes. These interactions provide a rich source for pragmatic analysis. This research employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. The data consist of utterances containing conversational implicatures produced by the characters in the film. The data were collected through observation and note-taking techniques and analyzed using Grice's (1989) Cooperative Principle, Halliday's context of situation, and speech act theory to identify the functions of the resulting implicatures.The findings indicate that conversational implicatures are formed through violations of the maxims of quantity, quality, relation, and manner. Such violations allow speakers to communicate implied meanings that cannot be understood solely from the literal interpretation of their utterances but require consideration of the conversational context. Furthermore, the identified implicatures perform representative, directive, expressive, commissive, and declarative functions. The study concludes that violations of the Cooperative Principle serve as pragmatic strategies for expressing hidden intentions, maintaining interpersonal relationships, and conveying meanings effectively within the social and political context portrayed in the film..
