Abstract

ABSTRACT

This study aims to describe the role of humor and the forms of carnivalesque humor that appear in the fil “Die Gänseprinzessin” and to analyze how humor function as a form of resitance against the hierarchy of power in the film. This study employs a qualititave approach using narrative analysis. Data were collected through repeated film viewings, dialogue transcripts, and notes on scenes containing elemnts of carnivalesque humor. Data analysis employs Sugiyono’s (2017) model, which includes data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The theotrical framework consists of Mikhail Bakhtin’s theory of the carnivalesque and James C. Scott’s theory of resistence, which underpin the analysis of the research data, specially scenes and dialogues containing humorous elements in the film. There are 7 data points in this Study with three carnivalesque indicators, as follow : 1.) Ambivalent Laughter : There are 3 data points that have been analyzed and contain this element; 2.) Grotesque Forms : While there are no literal examples in this study, three of the analyzed data points contain this element; 3.) Suspession of Hierarchy : Regarding this carnavalesque indicator, this study analyzed one data point that contained this element. The results of the analysis of the three carnivalesque indicators and the mechanisms of resitensce theory underlying each presented data point indicate that humor in fairy-tale films does not merely serve as entertainment but rather plays a role in the characters’strategies of symbolic resistence.
