THE USE OF THE TRANSPOSITION TRANSLATION TECHNIQUE FOR GERMAN NOUN PHRASES IN "NADI MAGAZINE", VOLUME 28, 2021

Abstract

This study aims to describe the use of the transposition translation technique for German noun phrases in Indonesian in NADI Magazine, Volume 28, 2021. The study employs a descriptive qualitative approach, with data sources consisting of bilingual articles in German and Indonesian published in the magazine. The research data consist of noun phrases that underwent transposition during the translation process. Data collection was conducted using the documentation technique, while data analysis was based on Catford’s (1965) theory of translation shifts, which includes class shift, structure shift, unit shift, and intra-system shift. The results of the study indicate that all of these shift categories were found in the translation of noun phrases. Structural shift was the most dominant type due to differences in phrasing patterns between German—which tends to use an attributive pattern where the attribute (atribute) precedes the head (kern)—and Indonesian, which uses a pattern where the head of the noun phrase comes first and is then modified by its attributes. In addition, shifts in grammatical category, shifts in units resulting from the translation of German compound words into Indonesian phrases, and intra-system shifts related to the number system were also identified. These findings indicate that the technique of transposition plays a crucial role in producing translations that are accurate, natural, and consistent with the rules of the target language.
