ABSTRACT
This study examines the representation of women's positions in the Netflix series Die Kaiserin using Sara Mills' Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). The research aims to describe how women are positioned as subjects and objects, how power relations are constructed, and how the audience is directed to interpret the female protagonist within the discourse of the series. This study employs a qualitative descriptive approach. The primary data consist of dialogues, narratives, and scenes from the first and second seasons of Die Kaiserin, while secondary data are obtained from relevant literature on Sara Mills' Critical Discourse Analysis, gender studies, and film studies. Data were collected through observation and note-taking techniques and analyzed using the concepts of subject position, object position, power relations, and audience position. The findings reveal that Elisabeth's position is constructed dynamically throughout the narrative. Initially, she is predominantly represented as an object constrained by the patriarchal monarchy through various forms of control over her body, behavior, and social role. As the story develops, Elisabeth gradually establishes her subjectivity by expressing her opinions, questioning royal conventions, and negotiating existing power structures. Furthermore, the series encourages audiences to critically reflect on gender inequality within the monarchical system. This study demonstrates that women's representation is
continuously constructed through discourse and highlights the relevance of Sara Mills' Critical Discourse Analysis in examining gender representation in audiovisual media.
