Abstract

ABSTRACT

Semantic relations constitute one of the cohesion devices that establish textual coherence by connecting lexical units and maintaining the continuity of meaning across a text. This study aims to analyze semantic relations as a means of creating lexical cohesion in the Mein Beruf – Jobs für Kinder erklärt category of the Dein Spiegel section on the Der Spiegel online news portal. This research employed a qualitative approach with descriptive methods. The data consisted of lexical units indicating semantic relations collected through documentation techniques. The data were classified according to the semantic relations proposed by Linke, Nussbaumer, and Portmann (2004) and analyzed based on the forms and functions of lexical cohesion. The findings revealed a total of 61 instances of semantic relations functioning as lexical cohesion, comprising 42 instances of recurrence and 19 instances of substitution. Recurrence was realized through complete and partial repetition of lexical items, whereas substitution was realized through synonymy, hyponymy, hypernymy, and metaphor. The findings further indicate that recurrence maintains topic continuity by repeating lexical items referring to the same referent, while substitution preserves textual coherence through semantically related lexical variations without disrupting the continuity of meaning. This study is expected to contribute to the development of research on semantic relations as a means of creating lexical cohesion in German texts and serve as a reference for future studies on text linguistics using different linguistic data sources.
