This study examines the shift in moral values of the character Sergeant Carl Rasmussen in the film Under sandet (2015) by Martin Zandvliet through the perspective of Friedrich Nietzsche's genealogy of morals. The objective of this study is to describe Rasmussen's initial moral values toward German soldiers, identify the factors influencing the shift in his moral values, and analyze this shift using Nietzsche's framework of the genealogy of morals. The analysis method used is a descriptive qualitative method with a textual analysis approach. The data consists of scenes and dialogues in the film, as well as literature on Nietzsche's philosophy.
The results show that at the beginning of the film, Rasmussen's moral values are rooted in slave morality (Sklavenmoral), arising from collective ressentiment due to the German occupation of Denmark. This manifests as a collective opposition between the Danish group and the German occupiers, without acknowledging the individual suffering of the prisoners. The shift in his moral values is driven by the intensity of personal interactions with the prisoners. Genealogically, Rasmussen's initial hatred constitutes Herkunft (a lineage of collective experience) rather than Ursprung (a fixed nature), and these personal interactions fracture the initial good–evil opposition based on group identity. Ultimately, Rasmussen's moral shift is an authentic transvaluation of values (Umwertung der Werte): he creates his own values from personal experience, rather than merely reversing good and evil between two collective groups
