ABSTRACT

This study investigates the translation strategies employed to resolve word-level non-equivalence when translating German terminological compounds into Indonesian. Data were collected from Deutsche Welle (DW) digital news articles and cross-validated against the Interactive Terminology for Europe (IATE) database. Utilizing a descriptive qualitative design, the analysis is grounded in Mona Baker's (2011) taxonomy of word-level translation strategies. Findings reveal that 7 out of Baker's 8 proposed strategies were utilized across 25 validated compound terms. The distribution is dominated by translation by paraphrase using a related word (10 instances), followed by translation using a more general word or superordinate (6 instances), paraphrase using unrelated words (3 instances), translation using a more neutral or less expressive word (2 instances), omission (2 instances), cultural substitution (1 instance), and loan word usage (1 instance). No instances of translation by illustration were identified. Overall, translators prioritize target-reader readability, naturalness, and acceptability by unpacking complex German compound words into nominal phrases adhering to Indonesian Diterangkan-Menerangkan (DM) syntactic rules. These findings highlight how journalistic constraints and structural typological differences between German and Indonesian influence terminological adaptation in digital news translation.
