Direct speech acts and indirect speech acts are very close to our everyday life. The Girls in the Dark novel is one of
many types of literature that can be used to learn and practice an understanding of direct and indirect speech acts.
Therefore, the conversation becomes easier to understand and does not cause misunderstandings and conflicts. The
purpose of this study is to (1) identify the expressions of direct and indirect speech acts; (2) describe the meaning of
direct and indirect speech acts. This is a descriptive qualitative study. Data analysis using the Miles and Huberman
technique. Describing the meaning of expressions is done by identifying sentence types (declarative sentences,
interrogative sentences, imperative sentences) and then classifying the utterance acts of expression. An expression is
classified as a direct speech act if the meaning of the expression is in line with the type of sentence. On the other hand,
when the meaning of the utterance does not match the sentence type, it is classified as an indirect speech act. The data
obtained for direct speech acts are 224 data. As for indirect speech acts, there were 62 data. The main character Itsumi
uses direct speech acts in conversation more often than indirect speech acts. The most frequently used type of sentences
in the novel Girls in the Dark is declarative sentences, followed by interrogative sentences. The least used type of
sentence is imperative sentences.
