Humans have the ability to hide their true feelings from an utterance. By studying expressive speech acts, it will be
easier for the interlocutor to understand the implied feelings of an utterance. Austin divides expressive speech acts into
apologies, thanks, sympathy, expressing attitudes, greetings, wishes, challenges. The formulation of the problem in this
study is how the function of expressive speech acts in a Japanese dorama entitled "Hitsuji To Hagane No Mori". This
research aims to find out how the function of expressive speech acts in the Japanese dorama entitled "Hitsuji To Hagane
No Mori". This research is a descriptive qualitative research. The data collection method used is the Observation
method, the technique used in this research is the Uninvolved Conversation Observation Technique. In analyzing, using
pragmatic analysis to examine the use of expressive speech act function. The theory used is the theory of expressive
speech acts according to Austin (1965). The results of the research found there are 17 data of expressive speech acts.
There are 4 functions of expressive speech acts found. The expressive speech acts found are apologies, insinuations,
complaining and expressions of gratitude.
