This study examines the learning motivation of autodidact Japanese language learners. This study aims to
explain what motivates Japanese language learners to study independently and why. This type of research
is descriptive qualitative research. The data collection technique used an open-ended questionnaire. The
result of this study shows that autodidact Japanese language learners tend to have greater integrative
motivation than instrumental motivation. As well as the reasons for autodidact learners, 6 out of 10
respondents answered that chose to learn Japanese autodidact because liked learning alone and felt more
flexible. The other reason is because the respondents do not have the time and money to attend courses.
