Abstract

Abstract
The speaker plays a role as a message conveyer, while the listener grasps the meaning of the speaker's
message and provides feedback. In conveying the meaning of commands, the speaker not only uses
imperative sentences but also declarative and interrogative sentence structures are frequently used to
express the meaning of imperatives, including commands, requests, invitations, or prohibitions. This study
aims to analyze the use of imperative sentences in the drama "Cool Boys Only High" episodes 1-2 by
Akihiro Karaki. The research method used is descriptive with a qualitative approach. The theory used to
answer the research questions in this study is based on Makino and Tsutsui's theory (1996:70) where in the
Japanese language, the use of imperative sentences is divided into four types based on meaning, which
consists of ?? (meirei) which means imperative command sentences, ?? (irai) meaning requests, then
? ? (kanyuu) meaning invitation imperative sentences, and ? ? (kinshi) meaning prohibitions.
Furthermore, the theory of indirect imperative sentences by Rahardi (2006:134-148) is also applied, which
is divided into two types: imperative sentences with declarative structure and imperative sentences with
interrogative structure. Each type is further divided into four forms: commands, requests, invitations, and
prohibitions. The research results indicate that imperative sentences in the drama "Cool Boys Only High"
episodes 1-2 by Akihiro Karaki are differentiated into 30 instances of direct imperative sentences. There
are 36 instances of indirect imperative sentences expressed in declarative sentence structure and 15
instances in the interrogative sentence structure.
