Abstract

Abstract
The conditional sentences to, ba, and tara are forms whose usage is difficult. These can express similar
meanings when used to describe a situation so they have the potential to be substituted for each other. This
research was conducted to describe the grammatical meaning of conditional sentence to and its substitution
with ba and tara in the movie Drive My Car (2021) through a qualitative method. After data collection, 22
to conditional sentences were found in the movie. These data were classified and analyzed using the
theories of Nitta (2011) and Iori (2000). Based on the analysis? results, it is concluded that 7 of them
contain hypothetical situation meaning, 1 contains general conditional, 7 contain repeated conditional, 2
contain factual conditional and the other 5 conditional data are divided into objective form and speech
introduction. From the classification, 2 of the to hypothetical sentences cannot be substituted with tara and
1 cannot be substituted with ba. The general conditional in this research can be substituted with ba and
tara. One repeated conditional cannot be substituted with ba. The two of to factual conditional in this
research cannot be substituted with ba. Finally, 1 objective form cannot be substituted with ba.
