Abstract

Abstract

Social deixis is a reference to social identity in a speech. Deixis itself means reference, where the
referent can move from place to place, depending on the context surrounding the speech. In this research
there are two problems studied. The first problem is what type of social deixis is in the film Sen To
Chihiro No Kamikakushi, and the second is how social deixis functions in the film Sen To Chihiro No
Kamikakushi. The first problem formulation is analyzed using theory regarding Levinson's types of social
deixis. The second problem formulation was analyzed using Yan Huang's theory of social information.
This study used descriptive qualitative method. A qualitative approach was chosen because the data
analyzed is speech that requires description in words. The method used is the free-to-engage listening
method. The data source for this research is the film Sen To Chihiro No Kamikakushi.
From the results of this research, it was found that 42 social deixis data in the film Sen To Chihiro
No Kamikakushi which were used as data sources could be divided into two types. A. The first type is
relational social deixis which finds 22 data. This type consists of three categories. The first category is
"speaker and referent" using sonkeigo in the form of a noun, sonkeigo in the form of a verb, and sonkeigo
in the form of an adjective. The second category is "speaker and interlocutor" using kenjougo in the form
of a verb. The third category is "speaker and setting" which can be a variety of formal and informal
languages. B. The second type is absolute social deixis, finding 20 data. This type consists of two
categories. The first category is "authoritative speakers" which can be language varieties according to the
speaker's gender and language varieties according to the speaker's age. The second category is
"authoritative recipients" which can be language variations according to the recipient's gender, and
language variations according to the recipient's age.
The social deictic function that can be found in the film Sen To Chihiro No Kamikakushi is a total
of 33 data which can be divided into four categories. A. To refer to social class, namely the speaker's
social class and the interlocutor's social class. B. To refer to kinship relationships, namely distant
relationships and close relationships. C. To refer to age, namely the age of the speaker, the age of the
person speaking, and the age of the third person. D. To refer to gender, namely the gender of the speaker,
the gender of the person speaking, and the gender of the third person.
