ABSTRACT

The lack of research on intralingual translation and the limited knowledge of classical Japanese language
among Japanese language learners in Indonesia underlie the purpose of this research, which is to analyze how
intralingual translation methods and procedures are used in modern Japanese songs to classical Japanese
translation. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method with the translation methods theory by
Newmark, and the translation procedures theory by Vinay and Darbelnet to describe and explain the translation
process in the songs. The results of this study show that the translation methods and procedures used vary
depending on the lyrics of the translated songs. For example, the song "Senbonsakura (???)" by Kuro Usa P
often employs adaptation translation methods and adaptation procedures (18 out of 30 data). The song "Yoru ni
Kakeru (?????)" by YOASOBI mainly uses literal translation methods and literal procedures (24 out of 34
data). Then, the song "???????" by ?? frequently utilizes idiomatic translation methods and
equivalence procedures (13 out of 23 data). Out of a total of 87 data, the use of literal translation methods has the
highest frequency, with 32 data, and literal translation procedures with 34 data. However, it should be emphasized
that the choice of translation methods and procedures depends on the translator, as translators are free to select
the methods and procedures they want to use.
