Abstrak

This research aims to analyze errors and causes of errors in writing hiragana letters among students at SMA
Negeri 1 Krian. The type of research used is descriptive qualitative with data collection techniques in the
form of tests and questionnaires. The test is used to find out respondents' mistakes in writing hiragana letters,
while the questionnaire is used to find out why respondents often make mistakes in writing hiragana letters.
The respondents in this research were 53 students in class 11 of Social Sciences at SMA Negeri 1 Krian for
the 2023/2024 academic year. The data analysis used is the Miles and Huberman theory including data
reduction, data presentation, and data verification. The research results show that there are still many students
who make mistakes when writing hiragana letters. In particular, errors in writing dakuon and handakuon, as
well as errors in writing hiragana letters whose pronunciation is similar. This is in line with the results of the
questionnaire which showed that 34 respondents answered that many hiragana letters had similar shapes and
pronunciations, which caused them to often write these letters incorrectly. So it is hoped that Japanese
teachers in schools will place more emphasis on the 46 basic hiragana letters because Japanese can be one
of the competencies needed to pursue a career after graduating from high school.
