PENGGUNAAN GAIRAIGO (???) DALAM NOVEL LOVE STORY KARYA KITAGAWA ERIKO
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Goi refers to the collection of words in a language. In the context of language learning, mastering goi is
essential for effective communication in Japanese, both orally and in writing. Goi is divided into three categories:
wago (native Japanese words), kango (loanwords from Chinese), and gairaigo (loanwords from foreign
languages). Gairaigo consists of foreign words that have been integrated into Japanese with Japanese
pronunciation. The purpose of this study is to describe the types of gairaigo found in Kitagawa Eriko's "Love
Story" and to analyze the semantic shifts that occur in gairaigo words as well as their wago/kango counterparts.
The purpose of this study is to describe the types of gairaigo found in Kitagawa Eriko's "Love Story" and to
analyze the semantic shifts that occur in these gairaigo words as well as their wago/kango equivalents.. A
descriptive method with the "unstructured observation technique" was used. The analysis revealed a total of 36
gairaigo data. These were categorized into types of gairaigo: representational (lacking Japanese equivalents),
replacement (having Japanese equivalents), and truncated (shortened words). Among these, 4 instances showed
semantic shifts, including both narrowing and broadening of meaning, in both the loanwords and their wago/kango
counterparts. The study concludes that gairaigo is frequently used due to the absence of equivalent Japanese terms
to describe certain objects and because it often conveys a more modern and harmonious linguistic feel.
