Abstract

Assertive illocutionary speech acts are a type of speech act in which the speaker tries to express or state
something that is considered true. Assertiveness includes actions such as stating, informing, claiming,
suggesting, complaining, and so on. Tsundere characters are a character type often found in Japanese
popular culture, especially in anime, manga, and visual novels. Tsundere characters usually have two
contrasting personality sides: one side is cold, harsh, and often tends to be distant or antagonistic towards
people they like, while the other side is warm, gentle, and caring which usually emerges when the
relationship with that person becomes closer or in certain situations. The researcher conducted research on
assertive illocutionary speech acts with connotative meaning in tsundere characters because they had not
found other research that discussed in more depth about assertive speech acts and the connotative meaning
expressed by tsundere characters. Based on these reasons, this research has a problem formulation of the
types of assertive illocutionary speech acts, and the connotative meaning of tsundere characters in the
anime Zero no Tsukaima by Noboru Yamaguchi. The theory used is the theory of assertive illocutionary
speech acts. This research is a qualitative descriptive research. The data source used comes from the anime
Zero no Tsukaima. From the results of this research, it was found that three types of assertive illocutionary
speech acts were used, namely assertive illocutionary speech acts of stating 17 data, complaining 7 data,
and bragging 4 data, in addition, positive connotative meanings were found in 3 data, neutral 1 data, and
negative 6 data.
