Abstract

ABSTRACT

Sign language is a visual-gesture language that uses gestures, hand movements, facial expressions, and body
language to convey meaning. Like spoken and written languages, sign language reflects the culture and norms of a region
or country. The limited research and knowledge concerning Japanese Sign Language in the field of linguistics, particularly
semiotics, among Indonesian academics is the main foundation for conducting this research. This study analyzes sign
language signs in Japanese Sign Language using Peirce's semiotic analysis and compares them with Indonesian Sign
Language as depicted in the manga "Yubisaki to Renren" volumes 1-3. A descriptive qualitative approach is used with
note-taking techniques. Data analysis is conducted through literature study and inductive analysis using Peirce's triadic
semiotic theory and sign language comparison theory by Shinoda, Greene, and Dicker. From 76 data points, 9 out of 10
sign representations in the manga were identified, and 13 relevant data points were found in the comparison between
Japanese and Indonesian Sign Language. The results indicate that the formation of sign language is influenced by the
culture and norms of the local community.
Keywords : semiotics, Japanese sign language, Indonesian sign language, deaf, manga Yubisaki to Renren.
