Abstract

Abstract

This paper focuses on the perceptions and norms of Japanese internship university students at UNESA when using honorifics in the ground handling workplace. While the number of foreign workers is increasing due to Japan's shrinking population, university students feel that their opportunities to interact with Japanese people are limited. Through a questionnaire and interview survey, This research investigated the use and understanding of honorific expressions and the importance of their practice. The data collection methods used were questionnaires (19 students each) and interviews (4 students each). The results showed that 70% of the students have a "good state" of understanding of honorifics, but often remain limited to the basic [is] and [are]. In addition, 57% of students feel that honorifics help build relationships, and 75% consider honorifics to be important in their daily lives. This is thought to be a strong influence of Javanese culture. Internships contribute to an improved understanding of honorifics, but there are still challenges in practice. In conclusion, the importance of practical in-class learning and social interaction opportunities is emphasized to improve students' understanding and ability to use honorific language in the work environment.
