MONO NO AWARE DALAM MAJAS METAFORA PADA HAIKU 行く春や 鳥啼き魚の 目は泪 KARYA MATSUO BASHO : KAJIAN STILISTIKA
Abstract
This study examines the haiku "行く春や 鳥啼き魚の 目は泪 " by Matsuo Bashō through a stylistic approach to reveal the presence of mono no aware conveyed via metaphor. Mono no aware, a distinctive aesthetic concept in Japanese culture, reflects a deep awareness of impermanence and a melancholic appreciation of fleeting beauty. The aim of this research is to describe how metaphor functions in shaping the emotional tone of the haiku and to explain how poetic language elements support the expression of mono no aware. The study employs a qualitative descriptive method with a stylistic analysis focusing on figurative language. The findings indicate that the metaphor in this haiku depicting an old king moved to tears by the singing birds of early spring represents an emotional projection onto nature, while also symbolizing sorrow over the passage of time. This metaphor enhances the aesthetic and emotional effect of the haiku, allowing mono no aware to emerge not only through content but also through its poetic and nuanced expression. Thus, the haiku serves not only as a personal reflection of the poet but also as a cultural embodiment of the Japanese sensitivity toward time, life, and nature.
