ANALISIS PENGGUNAAN DIALEK HOKKAIDO DALAM MANGA DOSANKO GYARU WA NAMARA MENKOI 『道産子ギャルはなまらめんこい』 KARYA IKADA KAI

Abstract

Communication is one of the most essential aspects of human survival. For communication to function properly, it relies on a system known as language. The formation of a language is strongly influenced by local customs and culture, which leads to the development of unique regional languages known as dialects. This study focuses on the Hokkaido dialect, a regional variety of the Japanese language used in the manga Dosanko Gyaru wa Namara Menkoi. The research aims to examine how the Hokkaido dialect is used in the manga and to identify its equivalents in standard Japanese hyoujungo. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach. Data were collected through reading, listening, and note-taking techniques, followed by an intralingual matching method to determine word equivalents. The stages of data analysis involved translating collected data, analyzing the dialects in context, and then matching them to standard Japanese expressions.The results show 39 instances of dialectal expressions, with namara and shitakke being the most frequently used. Namara means “very” and serves as an intensifier, equivalent to totemo in standard Japanese. Shitakke functions as a conjunction equivalent to soushitara, and it may also be used as a casual farewell in informal contexts. The study concludes that the Hokkaido dialect in the manga plays a strong sociolinguistic role, reflecting local identity and familiarity among characters. Moreover, some dialect expressions are becoming less commonly used among younger generations, gradually being replaced by standard forms.
