ABSTRACT

The gairaigo phenomenon, which is the use of foreign words adapted into Japanese in figure-rise assembly instructions, is a popular kit model in Japanese pop culture. With a qualitative descriptive approach, data is collected from the assembly guide and analyzed based on phonetic, morphological, and meaning aspects. Three main forms of gairaigo formation were found: phonetic adaptation (20 words), reduplication (7 words), and morpheme incorporation (23 words). Phonetic adaptation is the most dominant form, reflecting the Japanese language's strategy of adapting foreign terms to its phonological system. These findings support Loveday and Stanlaw's theories, and are expected to enrich Japanese language learning and linguistic studies, particularly in the context of technology and popular culture. In phonetic adaptation, the formation of gairaigo is carried out through the process of fusion, dissipation, and merging of letters. Then in the reduplication of the formation of gairaigo through the process of adding consonants and vowels. Meanwhile, in the incorporation of morphemes, the process that occurs is the addition at the beginning of the word, in the middle and at the end.
