Abstract

In Japan, the expression Aimai Hyougen has become part of their culture in communicating in an implicit or indirect way because they always care about the feelings of the other person. This study aims to explain the classification of the role of "Chotto"  and explain politeness strategies of Aimai Hyougen 「曖昧表現」 "Chotto"  in the anime "Hyouka" episodes 9-14. This study uses descriptive qualitative methods and note-taking techniques to collect data. In this study, the researcher took primary data from the anime series "Hyouka" episodes 9-14 which can be accessed via the internet. For secondary data, the researcher read from journals and articles that were published and easily accessible via the internet. As a result, out of 16 data that were successfully found, The analysis of the role of “Chotto” according to Yuriko Sunagawa is; Teidou (expressing a slight degree) was found in 6 data, Teidou no Yawarage (softening requests) was found in 2 data, Gochou no Yawarage (softening negative connotation tones) was found in 2 data, Iisashi (avoiding questions) was found in 3 data, Iisashi (omitting the rest of the sentence) was found in 1 data, and the last role found in the data above is the form Yobikake (calling) was found in 2 data. In conclusion, politeness strategies in the concept of Aimai Hyougen is very useful for social interaction in communication.
