Abstract

This study aims to describe the interrogative sentence in the Deutsche Bahn ad text. The use of various
interrogative sentences by Deutsche Bahn is the background for this research. These variations in the
interrogative sentence need to be analyzed more deeply so that readers can understand the intention of the
advertisement and do not cause misperceptions. This research will focus on the form of the interrogative
sentence. Related to this focus, this study will describe the construction of interrogative sentences based on
the syntactic features associated with the type of verb positions. In addition, this study will also describe
the function of each type of interrogative sentence itself. The data for the present study are derived from
Deutsche Bahn official website and Instagram accounts, which include 2 interrogative sentences WVerbzweitsätzefrage, 3 Verberstsätzefrage, and 2 Echofragesätze. The research was analyzed using Peter
Gallman's theory about interrogative sentences and verb position types, Heibig / Buscha about interrogative
sentences and types of sentences as well as sowinski about german stylistics. Based on the above theories,
it is found that the research result shows that the type of verb position one and position two can form the
interrogative sentence construction. In the position type the verb one or Verberstsätze can form an
interrogative sentence called the Verberstsätzefrage. Furthermore, the second position verb type or
Verbzweitsätze can form two interrogative sentence, namely the interrogative sentence WVerbzweitsätzefrage and Echofragesätze. What distinguishes these two constructions is that the WVerbzweitsätzefrage construction has the interrogative W- which is located at the beginning of the sentence while in Echofragesätze it is in the middle of the sentence or in Mittelfeld. Furthermore, the interrogative
sentence also has a question function which expects an answer to be present. Basically all questions require
the presence of an answer but there are also types of questions that do not expect an answer, namely the
rhetorical question type or Ich-Frage. In addition, related to the function, the question sentence is also often
associated with the exploratory function where the information expected is also in line with the expected
action as well. However, the interrogative sentence can also have other functions such as the affirmative
function, which is to reassure a speech that arises due to confusion from the speech partner.
