Abstract

The problem of translators in finding equivalent words is often hampered by cultural differences and terms that are not found in the target language because language is always related to culture. Words that have cultural elements cannot be understood completely free from local cultural phenomena that follow them, thus it is important for translators to use correct translation techniques in order to find equivalent
terms. Therefore, there are various choices of translation techniques so that translators are able to find the equivalence of the messages contained in a literary work, especially short stories that have limited space. Therefore, this study aims to find the translation technique used to translate the cultural words contained in the collection of short stories in the trilingual book The Final Party & Other Stories from Indonesian as the source language to German as the target language. This study uses the word culture theory by Newmark and the translation technique of Molina and Albir with a qualitative approach. Based on the results of the analysis found 33 cultural words spread in three short stories. The first short story Pesta Terakhir contains twelve cultural words, the second short story Kuda Terbang Maria Pinto contains seven cultural words, and the third short story Pohon Kersen contains fourteen cultural words. The cultural words were translated using eight translation techniques with details, seven cultural words using generalization techniques, six data of borrowing technique, seven data of calque technique, a data of amplification technique, eight data of literal translation, two data of common equivalent technique, one data each of particularization technique and transposition technique.
