Abstract

Inner conflict is a conflict within the character that is closely related to personal emotions. The researcher chose Siddhartha's novel to be studied because the novel has many elements of moral values that are learned from the inner anxiety experienced by Siddhartha during his life journey. Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic theory is one of the psychological theories that discusses conflicts that occur within a person, in line with the anxiety experienced by Siddhartha's character in Siddhartha's novel. Being a brahmin does not necessarily make Siddhartha quite happy, his desire to find happiness leads him to wander through various kinds of life. Therefore, this study aims to describe the inner conflict of the main character in Siddhartha's novel. The method used in this study is a qualitative descriptive method using a literary psychology approach. In this study, the data collection technique used was a reading and note-taking technique with data in the form of a text containing the conflict of the main character in Siddhartha's novel. The results of this study indicate that there are seven inner conflicts experienced by the Siddhartha’s character during his journey to find happiness. The id in Siddhartha to seek happiness makes his ego decide to go on an odyssey that makes Siddhartha fall for worldly desires. But his superego can make him realize that the path he has chosen is wrong. Finally he can find happiness after he can control his id, ego, and superego.
