Abstract

German learners in Indonesia currently use Kursbuch Netzwerk A1 to B1 as a reference for learning German, including the State University of Surabaya. In this book there are various materials to improve language skills, one of which is reading comprehension (Leseverstehen). In order to understand the reading, a cohesive and complete text is needed. The integrity of the text is built by the element of cohesion which is indicated by the use of cohesion markers. Therefore, this study aims to describe (1) the markers of cohesion in the Kursbuch Netzwerk A1 Chapter 1-6 passages of the reading text and (2) the function of these markers of cohesion. The research data is in the form of text containing cohesion markers. This
research is a descriptive qualitative research. The theory used in this study is specifically related to the classification of the types of cohesion markers using the theory of Wolfgang Schindler. As for the various types of cohesion marker functions, this study uses the theory of Sumarlam, Barz, Tarigan and Sugono. Based on data analysis, the results of this study showed that 272 cohesion markers were found with details of 62 Rekurrenz (repetitions), 56 Pro-Formen, 5 Substitutions (substitutions), 49 Articles, 70 Konnexion (connectors) and 30 Ellipse (ellipsis) from 9 texts reading Chapter 1-6 in the Kursbuch Netzwerk A1 textbook published in 2017. With different functions, including emphasis function, designation function, function of repeating words or phrases to a more specific meaning, connecting function (connecting between sentences, connecting sequences of events) and sentence effectiveness functions.
