Abstract

Fairy tales are one of the short stories in oral literature that are believed not to have really happened, are part of folklore and not only provide entertainment but are also a powerful means of instilling values, so fairy tales always contain moral lessons. Along with the times, traditional fairy tales have experienced significant developments in the form of delivery media and authors and have become modern fairy tales. Although in the form of modern literary works, as a fairy tale, modern fantasy works still show the narrative pattern of folklore (Bunanta, 1998: 45 in Nurgiyantoro, 2011: 234). Propp was a Russian literary researcher who summarized all folktales into seven spheres of action and 31 fixed elements or so-called narrative functions (Pradotokusumo, 2005:69). In fairy tales, the characters may change, but the actions and roles remain the same (Luxemburg et al., 1989:40). This study aims to describe the narrative function and characters contained in the fairy tales Schlaf gut, kleiner Fuchs!, Gefahr auf der Traumwiese and Rosalie und die Eule. The method used in this research is a qualitative method with an objective approach. Based on the results and discussion of Vladimir Propp's narrative functions, there are 17 functions in the fairy tale Schlaf gut, kleiner Fuchs!, 17 functions in the fairy tale Gefahr auf der Traumwiese and 15 functions in the fairy tale Rosalie und die Eule by Dörte Müler. Then from these narrative functions, 4 characters each were found in the fairy tales Schlaf gut, kleiner Fuchs!, Gefahr auf der Traumwiese and Rosalie und die Eule.
