The Equivalents of the German Prepositions Zu and Nach as Local Markers in the Novel Drachenreiter

Abstract

This study aims to describe the use of German prepositions zu and nach as local markers in the translation of Cornelia Funke's novel Drachenreiter. Local markers are used to indicate place or location relationships that are oriented toward a destination. The data used in this study are sentences containing the German prepositions zu and nach in the novel Drachenreiter and its Indonesian translation entitled Sang Penunggang Naga. Data collection used by using the observation and note-taking technique, and the analysis of the research data was based on the theory by Helbig and Buscha (1996). The results of this study show that the German prepositions zu and nach have 9 equivalent forms that function as local markers. Local relationship markers are used to indicate that the subject is moving toward a specific target, namely a place, building, or person, with the intention of reaching that point.
