Abstract

Film adaptation is the process of transferring a litetary work into a cinematic form, which often results in changes, particularly in the narrative structure. Differences in the characteristics of literary and film media require various adjustments so that the story can be effectively conveyed to the audience. Therefore, this study aims to describe plot adaptation in the fim adaptation of the fairy tale Sechse kommen durch die ganze Welt by Brüder Grimm, directed by Uwe Janson. The data sources of this study are the original fairy tale text and its film adaptation, while the data consist of plot elements that undergo changes during the adaptation process.this research employs a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collected through observation and note-taking techniques. Data analysis is conducted by comparing the plots of the fairy tale and the film based on the concepts of reduction, addition, dan varied transformation ad proposed by Enste (1991). The findings show that the adaptation process involves 3 instances of plot reduction in the form of omitted events, 19 instances of plot addition in the form of newlt introduced scenes absent from the source text, and 8 instances of varied transformation involving changes in the sequence and presentation of events. These adaptations are made to accommodate film duration, dramatic needs, and narrative effectiveness, resulting in a plot that is more communicative and easily understood by the audience.
