Abstract

Papua is one of the sensitive areas for earthquakes. It is located in the east of Indonesia’s archipilago, and has complex geological structures because it is shaped from two interacted earth’s plates : Indo-Australia plate and Pasific plate. The purposes of this research are to determine the correlation of moment magnitude (Mw) with rupture duration (Tdur) of local earthquake for early detection of tsunami in Papua and to analyze the correlation of moment magnitude with rupture duration of local earthquake for early detection of tsunami in Papua by learning the empirical similarity. The method used in the research is a direct method. By means, managing the rupture duration uses Joko Tingkir software in which the data are taken from (http://eida.gfz-potsdam.de/webdc3/) in 2008-2014 , and the moment magnitude is from (http://www.globalcmt). Accordingly, the empirical similarity between the rupture duration and the moment magnitude is seeked with linear regression and linear correlation method. The result of the research gives an empirical formula MwTdur = 0,033Tdur + 3,645 with coeficient of correlation 0,88 and coeficient of determination 77,9%. Thus, concluded that similarity can be used to determine the moment magnitude by determining the rupture duration from seismograph.

Keywords: Local earthquake, linear correlation, Moment magnitude, Rupture duration.
